Introduction

THE TRUE TEST OF A MAN’S CHARACTER IS WHAT HE DOES WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING.

-JOHN WOODEN

I wrote this book because, as a young wrestler, I could have used something like this; to hear from someone who had been through an entire academic wrestling career and could share what they had learned. Throughout my career, I often sought out sayings to express how I felt and people I could relate to. I always wondered if I was doing everything possible to perform to the best of my ability. Was I thinking the right thoughts, drilling the correct way, lifting the most important muscles? On these pages, I hope I can show you what worked for me and, at the very least, point you in the right direction.

As you read the following pages, remember that this was my journey. The journey an athlete embarks on is an individual one, long and filled with many surprises. The main thing you will have to accept is uncertainty. Ride the storm out and see where it takes you.

I hope there is something you want from wrestling or athletics in general. If you are unsure, take a moment to think about it. What I set for my goal will not be the same as you set for yourself. Regardless of whether your ambition exceeds mine or not, you can find your way to be happy with the wrestling chapter of your life. Despite how your last match ends, or even when it occurs, one of the best goals you can set for yourself would be to leave the sport with your head up.

The principles of wrestling can be applied to all aspects of your life to give you that extra edge you need for success. A slight advantage can be the difference between achieving your dream or realizing you have to live with your failures in wrestling and life.
